A closer look at the story
Convicted in the 1940s of a double murder, banker Andy Dufresne arrives at Shawshank to serve a term that will stretch across decades. His reserved manner sets him apart from the other prisoners at first, yet his talent with figures soon makes him useful to the warden who runs the place. Inside, he forms a slow, steady friendship with Red, a long-serving inmate played by Morgan Freeman. Written and directed by Frank Darabont from a Stephen King story and released in 1994, the film follows Tim Robbins as Andy in a patient, humane portrait of dignity, routine and a stubborn refusal to stop believing in a future.
