A closer look at the story

Set between 1945 and 1955, The Godfather follows the Corleones, an Italian-American family whose influence reaches deep into New York's criminal underworld. Patriarch Don Vito Corleone rules through favours, alliances and the quiet promise of force behind them. When someone tries to kill him, his youngest son Michael is pulled into the family's affairs in ways that begin to reshape who he is. Adapted by Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola from Puzo's novel, directed by Coppola and released in 1972, the film is anchored by Marlon Brando and Al Pacino in an expansive crime drama about loyalty, succession and the price of power.
