A closer look at the story
The Office is a British comedy set in the offices of a company called Wernham Hogg. For the people who work there, days are spent between David Brent, a nightmare of a boss, tedious colleagues and pointless tasks. Characters such as Tim Canterbury, Gareth Keenan and Dawn Tinsley try to keep their own small worlds intact amid the monotony. The series captures the embarrassing moments and quiet disappointments of working life with bone-dry humour. Created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and broadcast on BBC Two from 2001 across two seasons and 12 episodes, it stars Gervais, Martin Freeman, Mackenzie Crook and Lucy Davis and aired before the 2005 American series that shares its name.
