A closer look at the story
Living out his old age in a care home, Paul Edgecomb begins to recall the years when he was the guard in charge of death row at a prison in the American South. He watched countless men walk the green-floored corridor from their cells to the electric chair, but none left a mark on him like John Coffey. Sentenced to death for the murder of two little girls, this towering man is, despite his frightening appearance, extraordinarily gentle and fragile. He also has an inexplicable ability to heal people's illnesses. Frank Darabont both adapted Stephen King's novel and directed this 189-minute 1999 film, which stars Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, David Morse and James Cromwell in a supernatural drama.
