A closer look at the story

X-Men: Days of Future Past stages the mutants' fight for survival across two different eras. In the future they have been locked away in camps, and robotic hunters called Sentinels are tracking them down and killing them until the whole species stands on the edge of extinction. Faced with this, the old adversaries Magneto and Charles Xavier set their feud aside. Their only hope lies in going back to the moment the catastrophe began. Because Wolverine can heal himself, he is the one able to withstand the toll of travelling through time, so with Kitty Pryde's help he is sent into the past. His task is to stop the Sentinels, a product of experiments at Trask Industries, before they are ever built, and the X-Men battle alongside their younger selves to rewrite history. This 132-minute science-fiction action film from 2014 was directed by Bryan Singer from Simon Kinberg's script. Hugh Jackman plays Logan, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender play the young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, and Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen appear as Professor X and Magneto.
