A closer look at the story
Billionaire industrialist and brilliant inventor Tony Stark is abducted in Afghanistan and held prisoner in a cave, where his captors demand that he build them a devastating weapon. With only scraps to work with, Stark makes something else entirely: a weaponised suit of armour that can get him out. Once free, he uncovers a sinister scheme with consequences for the whole world, and decides to put on the armour he designed and confront the threat as Iron Man. Directed by Jon Favreau and written by Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, the 126-minute 2008 film stars Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow in a superhero origin story.
