The Master and Margarita

A closer look at the story

In 1930s Soviet Moscow, the life of a struggling writer is sent spinning in a new direction when a mysterious professor arrives in the city. This enigmatic visitor is not alone; he is accompanied by a truly peculiar retinue: a smart-mouthed trickster, a lethal assassin, a vampire maid and an enormous black cat that can talk. The professor and his companions soon throw Moscow into turmoil. Amid the chaos, the hypocrisy of those who hold power is laid bare one by one. The writer, meanwhile, sees his own life and creativity transformed in the middle of these extraordinary events. Adapted from Mikhail Bulgakov's famous novel, directed by Michael Lockshin from a Roman Kantor screenplay, this 157-minute 2024 fantasy drama stars August Diehl, Yuliya Snigir, Evgeny Tsyganov and Claes Bang.
