A closer look at the story

Donnie Darko is a strange and mysterious tale set at the end of the 1980s. Donnie, a troubled teenager, survives a freak accident by the narrowest of margins. In its wake he starts to see things that are not real, and the vision that returns most often is an unsettling figure in the shape of a huge rabbit. Already struggling to fit in with the people around him, Donnie falls more and more under the influence of this enigmatic visitor. As the rabbit figure steers him towards a series of crimes, Donnie drifts away from the path his family and his school have laid out for him and starts following his mysterious guest instead. Richard Kelly wrote and directed this 114-minute fantasy mystery drama from 2001. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Donnie, with Jena Malone as Gretchen Ross, James Duval as Frank, Drew Barrymore as Karen Pomeroy and Beth Grant as Kitty Farmer.
