Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi

A closer look at the story

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, whose title means "Because the mother-in-law was once a daughter-in-law too", is one of India's best-known family dramas. The series looks at the relationships within a large family, especially the balance between a mother-in-law and her daughters-in-law. The drama centres on a mother-in-law struggling to cope with her three daughters-in-law. In time, these daughters-in-law have grown-up sons of their own, and the roles within the family begin to shift. When girlfriends enter their sons' lives, the women who were once daughters-in-law now meddle in their own sons' relationships and try to break them up. In this way, the cycle highlighted in the show's title comes full circle: those who were once daughters-in-law now play the mother-in-law. The Virani family is the focus of the drama. Created by Ekta Kapoor and airing on StarPlus since 2000, the series stars actors including Smriti Irani, Amar Upadhyay, Shakti Anand, Gauri Pradhan Tejwani and Ketki Dave.
