Spanglish: A Mexican mother's life in a wealthy family's home

KINONOOK / EN

A closer look at the story

Flor Moreno is a single mother who has moved from Mexico to Los Angeles with her daughter in hope of a better life. John and Deborah Clasky, an affluent couple who have two kids, take Flor on as their housekeeper. Flor tells them that looking after her daughter Cristina makes the hours impossible, so Deborah makes a decisive call: Flor and her daughter will move into the Clasky home. The decision leads two very different cultures to collide under one roof. Flor struggles with a language barrier that is hard to overcome, with the problems of her adolescent daughter and with the Claskys' unfamiliar way of life. On top of that, a love beginning to bloom in her heart complicates things further. As the two families raise their children with completely different outlooks, tensions mount. Written and directed by James L. Brooks, this 130-minute 2004 comedy-drama stars Adam Sandler, Téa Leoni and Paz Vega.
