A closer look at the story
New York police detective John McClane travels to Los Angeles hoping to spend Christmas with the wife he has been living apart from. While her company's festive party is under way in a skyscraper, a group of terrorists led by Hans Gruber seizes the building and takes the guests hostage. At the last moment McClane manages to slip away unseen. Tired, alone and armed with nothing but a gun, the off-duty policeman, concealed somewhere in the tower, becomes the hostages' only hope and launches a one-man war against the terrorists. Adapted from Roderick Thorp's novel and directed by John McTiernan, the 132-minute 1988 film stars Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Bonnie Bedelia and Reginald VelJohnson in an action classic.
