The Little Mermaid

A closer look at the story

Ariel, the curious and headstrong mermaid princess and daughter of King Triton, is endlessly fascinated by the world of humans above the waves. When she catches sight of the handsome Prince Eric, she falls in love with him and decides to risk everything for a chance to be with him. To make her dream come true she strikes a dangerous bargain with the wicked sea witch Ursula: Ursula will give her a pair of legs, and in return she will take Ariel's beautiful voice. Ignoring every warning, Ariel goes ashore and begins to discover both a new world and the true cost of her deal. Written and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the 83-minute 1989 animated film, voiced by Jodi Benson, Samuel E. Wright and Pat Carroll, is a colourful fairy tale with memorable songs.
