A closer look at the story

In Scotland's mystical Highlands, Merida, daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor, is a superbly gifted archer and every bit as rebellious. Convinced that her destiny is hers to decide, she defies a sacred custom that has endured in the land for centuries. Her decision angers Lord MacGuffin, Lord Macintosh and Lord Dingwall, who want the tradition upheld, and shakes the order of the kingdom. Hoping to mend the damage, the princess visits a strange old wise woman and makes a wish, but the wish turns into a dreadful curse nobody saw coming. Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, the 93-minute 2012 animated film, voiced by Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly and Julie Walters, is a fairy-tale adventure.
