A closer look at the story

Frank Lucas, who hails from La Grange, North Carolina, spends years as the driver for one of New York's leading crime bosses, a man nobody pays much attention to. When his boss dies suddenly, however, he sees the opportunities opening up before him and decides to build an empire of his own. Through intelligence and a rigid work ethic he quickly takes control of the drug trade in Harlem, smuggling heroin into the country aboard US military aircraft flying home from Vietnam. On the other side, Newark detective Richie Roberts takes charge of a special task force set up to track down this new crime lord. Ridley Scott directs Steven Zaillian's screenplay, inspired by real events; the 157-minute 2007 film pits Denzel Washington against Russell Crowe in a crime drama.
