A closer look at the story

(500) Days of Summer is an unconventional romantic comedy about a woman who does not believe in true love and the man who falls for her. Tom Hansen writes greeting cards for a living and is a hopeless romantic. The instant he sets eyes on Summer Finn he is smitten and convinced that she is the person he is meant to spend his life with. Summer, however, has no faith in either love or relationships. Even so, something more than friendship grows between them, even if neither can quite name it. Then, out of the blue, Summer breaks it off. In the aftermath Tom goes back over their five hundred days together, one by one, trying to pinpoint the moment things started to go wrong, and along the way he rediscovers what he truly cares about in life. Marc Webb directed this 95-minute romantic comedy from 2009, with Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter credited as writers. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Tom and Zooey Deschanel plays Summer, with Geoffrey Arend, Chloë Grace Moretz and Matthew Gray Gubler also in the cast.
