A closer look at the story
Stargate SG-1 begins about twelve months on from what happened in the 1994 film Stargate. The United States government discovers that the ancient alien device known as the Stargate leads not to just one world but to a vast network of similar gates on countless planets. A new team under Colonel Jack O'Neill travels to the planet Abydos and learns of Apophis, an alien who resembles the old Egyptian god Ra. And so SG-1 is born: a crack special-operations unit of the US Air Force. Among the twenty-plus teams Earth sends through the gate, SG-1, with Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson and Teal'c, explores the galaxy and protects Earth from hostile forces including the Goa'uld, the Replicators and the Ori. Created by Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright, the series began on Showtime, moved to Syfy and ran from 1997 for ten seasons and 214 episodes; this science-fiction series stars Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks.
