The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson
The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson: Three decades of late night
A closer look at the story
Johnny Carson presented this late-night talk show as part of The Tonight Show franchise between 1962 and 1992. For its first decade the programme was made in New York, with the team making occasional trips to Burbank, California. In May 1972, the show relocated to Burbank for good. Alongside Carson, announcer Ed McMahon and bandleaders Doc Severinsen and Skitch Henderson were among the programme's familiar faces. Conversations with celebrity guests and comedy formed the core of the show, with stars such as Bob Hope among those who dropped by. Broadcast on NBC, the programme wrapped up after 31 seasons and 3,777 episodes. Steve Allen and Sylvester Weaver are credited as the creators of The Tonight Show.
