A closer look at the story

Thirteen-year-old Mei Lee is a confident girl. She is caught between the expectation that she be her mother's dutiful, well-behaved daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her overprotective mother, Ming, never wants to let her out of her sight, which is no easy thing for a teenager. As if the changes in her interests, her friendships and her body were not enough, Mei has a startling new problem: whenever she gets too excited, which is almost all the time, she suddenly turns into a giant red panda. Directed by Domee Shi, who wrote it with Julia Cho, the 100-minute 2022 animated film, voiced by Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh, is a warm and funny coming-of-age story.
