A closer look at the story
Summer, 1983. Seventeen-year-old Elio Perlman passes his days at his family's old villa in northern Italy, playing music, reading and spending time with his friend Marzia. His father is a distinguished professor of Greco-Roman culture and his mother, Annella, is a translator. Elio is mature and intellectual for his age, yet still inexperienced in matters of the heart. Then Oliver, an American graduate student, arrives to stay at the villa for the summer as his father's assistant. As the sunlit days go by, a closeness grows between Elio and Oliver that will change both their lives for ever. Adapted by James Ivory from André Aciman's novel and directed by Luca Guadagnino, the 132-minute 2017 film stars Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg in an emotional romantic drama.
