A closer look at the story

In the near future, an alien force known as the Mimics has laid waste to the world's great cities, and every army on the planet has been forced to unite against them. Bill Cage, an officer with zero battlefield experience, is abruptly stripped of his rank and thrown onto the front line. The inevitable happens and Cage dies within minutes, though not before taking a special alien down with him. When he opens his eyes, he is back at the start of the same day. That contact has trapped him in a time loop: he must fight, die and wake up again. Within this loop, Cage crosses paths with a soldier named Rita. Adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel and directed by Doug Liman, the 114-minute 2014 film stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Brendan Gleeson and Bill Paxton in a cleverly built science-fiction action film.
