Hamnet
Hamnet: The love and loss that inspired Hamlet
A closer look at the story
Hamnet is a moving tale of love and grief that inspired William Shakespeare's timeless masterpiece, Hamlet. At its heart are Agnes, a healer, and her husband, Will. Bound to one another by deep love, the couple lead a simple, happy life with their children. One day, however, the plague comes to the family's door and takes their son, Hamnet. This immense grief sends Agnes and Will in very different directions. Carrying the weight of her loss, Agnes does everything she can to be there for her other children. Directed by Chloé Zhao and adapted by Zhao and Maggie O'Farrell from O'Farrell's own novel, this 125-minute 2025 drama stars Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal and Emily Watson.
