A closer look at the story

Carrie White is a sensitive, withdrawn high school student. At school she is the target of her classmates' cruel taunts; at home she is crushed by the psychological pressure of her fanatically religious mother, Margaret. Caught between the two, Carrie has nowhere to turn for refuge. One day, however, the suspicion takes hold that she carries supernatural powers within her. As she discovers them, everything she has silently endured takes on a new meaning, and events slide steadily in a dark and violent direction. Brian De Palma directs this 98-minute 1976 adaptation of Stephen King's novel, scripted by Lawrence D. Cohen and starring Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving and John Travolta.
