My Father and My Son

A closer look at the story

Sadık, a journalist whose wife died giving birth to their son during Turkey's 1980 military coup, returns years later with his young son Deniz to the family farm on the Aegean coast. His father Hüseyin never forgave him for choosing political activism over the life planned for him, and the rift between them has hardened into long silence. Sadık's homecoming is driven less by a wish to make peace than by worry about where his son will grow up. Deniz, meanwhile, finds himself in the middle of a lively and slightly eccentric household. Written and directed by Çağan Irmak, the 2005 film stars Fikret Kuşkan, Çetin Tekindor and Ege Tanman in a drama about family resentment, forgiveness and love across generations.
