A closer look at the story

On Chicago's South Side, serial killer Charles Lee Ray is gunned down by detective Mike Norris. Taking refuge in a toy store as he flees, Ray transfers his soul into one of the popular "Good Guy" dolls on the shelves. Now called Chucky, the doll has to find a living body into which he can move his soul once again. Meanwhile, Karen Barclay is upset that she cannot get the Good Guy doll her son Andy longs for as he turns six. Eventually, with her best friend Maggie, she finds one and brings it home. That night Maggie is looking after Andy, but someone else is in the house with them. Chucky shows himself for the first time, and a terrifying chain of events begins. Directed by Tom Holland, this 87-minute 1988 horror classic stars Alex Vincent, Catherine Hicks, Brad Dourif and Chris Sarandon.
