A closer look at the story

2012 depicts a struggle for survival on a planet heading for catastrophe. Dr. Adrian Helmsley, a member of an international team of geophysicists studying how radiation from extraordinary solar storms is affecting the Earth, discovers that the planet's core is growing hotter. He alerts the American president, Thomas Wilson, that the Earth's crust is becoming unstable and that unless plans are made to save at least a small part of the population, the human race will not survive. Around the same time, the writer Jackson Curtis comes across the same discovery by chance. As world leaders hurry to build huge vessels, so-called arks, to escape the coming disaster, Jackson searches for some way to rescue his family, while volcanic eruptions and earthquakes of a strength never seen before begin tearing the world apart. Roland Emmerich directed this 158-minute disaster film from 2009 and wrote it with Harald Kloser. John Cusack plays Jackson, Amanda Peet plays Kate and Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Helmsley, with Thandiwe Newton and Oliver Platt also in the cast.
