A closer look at the story

Captain America: The First Avenger takes place during World War II and follows Steve Rogers, a slight young man from Brooklyn who longs to serve but is turned away by the army again and again because of his poor health. His persistence catches the eye of Dr. Abraham Erskine, who selects him for an experimental programme. A serum transforms Steve into a super-soldier, and he soon becomes known as Captain America. His great adversary is the Red Skull, the merciless man in charge of weapons for Adolf Hitler, whose organisation holds the Tesseract, a mysterious object of immense power that it plans to turn into an instrument of world domination. Steve sets out to stop that scheme, and along the way he learns what loyalty and sacrifice mean among the friends who fight beside him. Joe Johnston directs this 124-minute action adventure from 2011, with a script that Stephen McFeely co-wrote alongside Christopher Markus. Chris Evans plays Steve Rogers, Hayley Atwell is Peggy Carter, Tommy Lee Jones appears as Colonel Chester Phillips and Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull, with Sebastian Stan also in the cast.
