A closer look at the story

I, Robot is set in 2035, when robots have become a major part of everyday life. They are designed to obey the three laws of robotics and have made themselves indispensable to the people they serve. Del Spooner, a Chicago police detective, is the exception: he deeply mistrusts robots and keeps technology at arm's length, which makes his life increasingly difficult. Spooner is assigned to look into the questionable death of a scientist, who turns out to have been working on a secret project until shortly before he died. The detective suspects that a robot may be behind the death. As his inquiry unfolds, what first looked like a routine case takes on a far more frightening dimension, and Spooner comes to believe that humanity itself may be at risk. This 2004 science-fiction thriller, 115 minutes long, was directed by Alex Proyas, inspired by the work of Isaac Asimov and written by Jeff Vintar and Akiva Goldsman. Will Smith plays Del Spooner, with Bridget Moynahan, James Cromwell and Bruce Greenwood in the cast and Alan Tudyk voicing Sonny.
