A closer look at the story

Oblivion is set on a future Earth that has become almost unrecognisable. Jack Harper belongs to a dwindling handful of drone technicians still posted on the planet. His work supports a huge effort to strip the planet of its last essential resources, following decades of fighting against a terrifying enemy known as the Scavs, and his assignment is almost over. Then he pulls a beautiful stranger from the wreckage of a crashed spacecraft, and the life he knows starts to come apart. Her arrival starts a series of events that leaves Jack questioning everything he believed to be true. Drawn into a reckoning with his own past, he finds himself on a journey of rescue and discovery, with the fate of humanity resting in his hands. This 2013 science-fiction adventure, 124 minutes long, was directed by Joseph Kosinski, a co-production between the United States, Britain, Japan and Iceland written by Karl Gajdusek and Michael Arndt. Tom Cruise plays Jack, with Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also in the cast.
