Back to the Future Part III: Marty and Doc stranded in the Wild West

A closer look at the story

Back to the Future Part III, the last chapter of the trilogy, takes Marty McFly and Doc Brown to the Wild West of 1885. Doc is stuck there because the DeLorean has broken down and the technology of the day cannot repair it, so he writes Marty a letter revealing where he has buried the car. Guided by that letter, Marty in 1955 recovers the DeLorean from an old mineshaft and heads back in time to find his friend. Nothing goes as hoped. When the time machine fails again, the two travellers are marooned in a land of spurs and dusty frontier towns. Further complications soon pile up: Doc falls head over heels for the schoolteacher Clara Clayton, a gang of outlaws is out to kill him, and Marty runs into serious trouble with Buford Tannen. Robert Zemeckis directed this 119-minute science-fiction adventure comedy from 1990, written by Bob Gale. Michael J. Fox plays Marty, Christopher Lloyd plays Doc Brown and Mary Steenburgen plays Clara, with Thomas F. Wilson as Buford Tannen and Lea Thompson as Maggie McFly.
