Slumdog Millionaire: From the slums to the edge of a quiz-show fortune

A closer look at the story

Slumdog Millionaire follows Jamal Malik, a young orphan who grew up in one of Mumbai's slums. Jamal is a single step away from the grand prize on the Indian edition of the Millionaire quiz show, but when the evening's episode wraps up he is taken into police custody. Nobody can accept that someone with no education could have come so far, and everyone suspects him of cheating. Held for questioning, Jamal looks back over his life, and each question he faced on the show turns out to be tied to a piece of his past. Behind every answer lies a memory that is hard to believe yet true. One question, however, still holds on to its secret. Danny Boyle directed this 121-minute British romantic drama from 2008, which Simon Beaufoy adapted from Vikas Swarup's novel. Dev Patel plays Jamal, Freida Pinto plays Latika and Madhur Mittal plays Salim, with Anil Kapoor and Mahesh Manjrekar also in the cast.
