A closer look at the story

The fellowship has broken apart, but the quest goes on. Frodo and Sam catch Gollum, who has been trailing them, and in return for his release the creature promises to lead them to the Black Gate of Mordor. Sam has no trust in their new guide, while Frodo cannot help pitying Gollum, who once carried the same burden. Elsewhere, the rest of their companions are fighting their own battles under the shadow of the treacherous wizard Saruman in the tower of Orthanc at Isengard, and of Sauron in Barad-dûr. Peter Jackson directs again, sharing the adaptation of Tolkien with Stephen Sinclair, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh; the 179-minute 2002 film features Sean Astin as Sam and Andy Serkis as Gollum in a fantasy saga.
