Poor Things
Poor Things: A reborn woman discovers the world
A closer look at the story
Young Bella Baxter dies tragically, but the scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter, known for his unorthodox methods, brings her back to life by replacing her brain with that of an infant. Carrying a child's curiosity in an adult body, Bella begins to explore the world around her under Baxter's protection. One day her path crosses with Duncan Wedderburn, a skilled but unscrupulous lawyer, and the two set off on a whirlwind adventure across continents. Entirely free of the prejudices of her era, Bella discovers herself on this journey and develops a firm commitment to equality and liberation. Adapted by Tony McNamara from Alasdair Gray's novel and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the 141-minute 2023 film stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe in an extraordinary fantasy comedy.
