Green Book: An unexpected friendship on a Southern tour

KINONOOK / EN

A closer look at the story

It is 1962. Tony Lip, an Italian-American bouncer, is rough around the edges but streetwise. He is hired as driver and bodyguard for Dr. Don Shirley, a world-renowned African-American pianist who is determined to tour the states of the Deep South, where segregation is still enforced by law. The pair set off relying on "The Negro Motorist Green Book", a guide listing places where Black travellers could stay safely. Over the course of the journey these two utterly different men face the discrimination around them and their own prejudices, and form a strong friendship. Drawn from real events and directed by Peter Farrelly, the 130-minute 2018 film stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali in a warm road movie.
