Howl's Moving Castle: A curse, a wizard and a house on the move
Original title: ハウルの動く城
A closer look at the story
The quiet life of Sophie, a young hat-maker, is overturned when a witch walks into her shop and curses her, turning her into an old woman. Unable to explain what has happened, Sophie leaves home, and her path leads her to the moving castle of the wizard Howl. Meeting Calcifer and Markl there, she finds an unexpected place for herself while catching glimpses of Howl's secrets. Meanwhile, a war breaking out across the land threatens to drag in Howl, who refuses to fight for the king. Adapted by Hayao Miyazaki from Diana Wynne Jones's novel and directed by him, the 119-minute 2004 animation is a vivid fairy tale about magic, war and love.
