A closer look at the story

Young Miguel's greatest wish is to become a musician like the legendary singer Ernesto de la Cruz. His family, however, has banned music from their home for generations, and no one has ever quite explained why. Determined to prove his talent, Miguel ends up, after a string of mysterious events, in the dazzling, colourful Land of the Dead. There he meets Héctor, a fast-talking trickster, and the journey they take together begins to bring to light a part of his family's past that no one has spoken about. Lee Unkrich directed this 2017 Pixar production, in which Anthony Gonzalez voices Miguel and Gael García Bernal plays Héctor, with Benjamin Bratt as de la Cruz; it is an emotional adventure about music, family and remembrance.
