Life Is Beautiful
Life Is Beautiful: A game a father invents for his son
Original title: La vita è bella
A closer look at the story
In 1930s Italy, Guido, a Jewish man whose good humour and imagination charm almost everyone he meets, falls for the teacher Dora and, against considerable odds, wins her over. Their son Giosué is born soon after, and the family builds a happy life together. When the Second World War brings deportation to a concentration camp, Guido protects the boy from fear the only way he knows how, presenting everything they endure as an elaborate game with rules, points and a grand prize. Directed by Roberto Benigni, who co-wrote it with Vincenzo Cerami, the 1997 film stars Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi and Giorgio Cantarini in a moving story that places comedy beside one of history's darkest chapters.
