Shutter Island

A closer look at the story

Teddy Daniels, who fought in the Second World War and later became a federal marshal, arrives with his partner Chuck Aule at a psychiatric hospital on Shutter Island. One of the patients held at this institution for offenders deemed insane has vanished without a trace. As what seems like a routine inquiry goes on, unsettling visions and the hospital's enigmatic doctor make Teddy's job ever harder, and the island turns out to be keeping far darker secrets than he expected. Adapted by Laeta Kalogridis from Dennis Lehane's novel and directed by Martin Scorsese, the 138-minute 2010 film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley and Michelle Williams in a psychological thriller.
