A closer look at the story

Each generation gives rise to a Slayer: a single girl in all the world, chosen and gifted with the power and ability to battle vampires, demons and every dark force. Buffy Summers is one of these Slayers, but she is also a teenager who has just moved to the town of Sunnydale with her mother and is trying to settle into her new school, Sunnydale High. Having been forced to set fire to her previous school to destroy vampires, she hopes to start an ordinary life here. Sunnydale, however, is built right on top of a Hellmouth and is crawling with all manner of demons and vampires. What makes it easier for her to carry a destiny she never wanted are her close friends Willow and Xander and her Watcher, Giles. The arrival in her life of Angel, a vampire with a soul, complicates things considerably. Created by Joss Whedon and airing on The WB and UPN from 1997 for seven seasons and 144 episodes, this fantasy drama stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy.
