A closer look at the story
Bill Parrish has everything a person could want: success, wealth, power and a happy family. Then, a few days before his 65th birthday, a mysterious young man named Joe Black turns up at his door. Joe's true identity is soon revealed: he is Death himself, come to take Bill's life. Bill strikes a deal to gain a little more time in the world and agrees to act as Death's guide on Earth. Tasting the pleasures of human life for the first time, Joe discovers love above all, but the woman he falls for is Bill's beautiful daughter, Susan. This makes Bill's final days far more difficult than he ever expected. Directed by Martin Brest, the 178-minute 1998 film stars Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins and Claire Forlani in a romantic fantasy drama.
