A closer look at the story
Now one hundred and one years old, Rose DeWitt Bukater looks back on what she lived through aboard the Titanic as a young woman. In 1912, the young Rose is travelling on it alongside her mother and her wealthy fiancé. On the same ship, Jack Dawson, a penniless artist who won his ticket by luck, is travelling in third class. The two meet by chance and grow closer despite the gulf of class between them, while one of history's best-known voyages heads towards its end. Written and directed by James Cameron, the 194-minute 1997 film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane and Kathy Bates and joins a romance to a disaster story on a grand scale.
