A closer look at the story

The Great Gatsby is seen through the eyes of Nick Carraway, a would-be writer who moves to New York in 1922. It is an age of relaxed morals, jazz on every corner, bootleg kingpins and dazzling parties. Pursuing an American Dream of his own, Nick soon meets the enigmatic millionaire Jay Gatsby, and through him and his cousin Daisy he is pulled into the circle of the extremely wealthy. Lavish gatherings where the liquor never stops, romances, illusions and lies all become part of Nick's new world. Yet behind a life that looks so radiant from outside there are truths that someone is working hard to hide, and the collapse of this enchanted dream is drawing near. Having witnessed it all, Nick will set down a story of impossible love and dreams that refuse to die. Baz Luhrmann directed this 143-minute romantic drama from 2013, an American-Australian production adapted with Craig Pearce from F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Gatsby, Tobey Maguire plays Nick and Carey Mulligan plays Daisy, with Joel Edgerton and Elizabeth Debicki in supporting roles.
