Wicked

A closer look at the story

In the land of Oz, Elphaba, shunned because of her green skin and constantly misunderstood, arrives at Shiz University to face a situation she never wanted: she has to share a room with Glinda, the school's most popular girl and a member of the aristocracy. Over time, an unexpected friendship takes root between these two utterly different young women. Their meeting with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz changes everything. While Glinda's longing for popularity pulls her in one direction, Elphaba's resolve to stay true to herself will have startling consequences for her future. As their paths diverge, the friendship is tested by the destinies of two women, one who will become Glinda the Good and the other the West's most feared witch. Jon M. Chu directs this 162-minute adaptation of Gregory Maguire's book, a 2024 musical fantasy starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
