Home and Away

A closer look at the story

Home and Away is a long-running series set in Summer Bay, a fictional seaside town in the Australian state of New South Wales. The show follows both the private and working lives of the people who live there. Early on, the focus was the Fletchers, Tom and Pippa, and the five children they fostered, Sally Keating, Frank Morgan, Lynn Davenport, Carly Morris and Steven Matheson. Sally Keating eventually ranked among the show's longest-serving characters. From the start, and still today, the series has also focused on the Stewart family. After launching in 1988, Home and Away quickly became a major success in Australia. It has also stood out for taking on many mature and controversial subjects despite airing in an early timeslot. Created by Alan Bateman and broadcast on the Seven Network, the series stars Ray Meagher as Alf Stewart and Lynne McGranger as Irene Roberts, with Ada Nicodemou, Shane Withington and Emily Symons also in the cast.
