The Favourite
The Favourite: The battle to stay at the Queen's side
A closer look at the story
In the early eighteenth century England is at war with France, yet life at Queen Anne's luxurious court carries on almost untouched. The ailing Queen's closest confidante is Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, who looks after Anne while effectively running the country on her behalf. That arrangement is shaken when Sarah's young cousin Abigail arrives at court. Abigail soon discovers ways to win the Queen's attention, and a ruthless rivalry breaks out between the two cousins over who will be the royal favourite. Court intrigues fuelled by power, ambition, love and envy follow one after another. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara, this 120-minute 2018 film stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz in a darkly comic period drama.
