A closer look at the story

Blade Runner unfolds in a Los Angeles of 2019 that is dark, dystopian and choking on smog. Rick Deckard once worked as a blade runner, an officer whose job was to hunt down the artificial humans known as replicants, but he has since retired. A dangerous new situation drags him back into service: a group of replicants has fled to Earth. These manufactured beings are built to live only a short time, and they are searching for the man who created them in the hope of finding a way to prolong their lives. Deckard's assignment is to find them and put an end to them before they reach their goal. Ridley Scott directed this 118-minute science-fiction film from 1982, which Hampton Fancher and David Webb Peoples adapted from a novel by Philip K. Dick. Harrison Ford plays Deckard, Rutger Hauer plays Batty and Sean Young plays Rachael, with Edward James Olmos and M. Emmet Walsh also in the cast.
