A closer look at the story

The Starfleet ship USS Voyager is suddenly hurled across the galaxy into the remote Delta Quadrant. Even at maximum warp, the Federation now lies decades away. Under the command of Captain Kathryn Janeway, the crew is forced into a voyage through unknown territory, with no familiar friends or support to rely on. On top of that, getting home depends on cooperating with a band of Maquis rebels. Coming from different backgrounds and values, the two groups have to learn to live together on the same ship, overcome the conflicts between them and survive in this distant region, where every day brings new dangers. Characters such as Chakotay, B'Elanna Torres, Tom Paris and Neelix are inseparable parts of this long journey home. Created by Rick Berman, Michael Piller and Jeri Taylor, the series ran on UPN from 1995, over seven seasons and 169 episodes, with Kate Mulgrew as Janeway.
