Sesame Street

A closer look at the story

Sesame Street is an educational programme for preschool children set on a special street in the heart of a big city. The street's residents are a mix of people and colourful Muppet characters, and together they teach young viewers fundamental educational and social ideas. The programme draws on comedy, cartoons, games and songs to turn learning from a chore into an enjoyable experience. The warm relationships between the human characters who live on the street and Muppets such as Telly, Zoe and Snuffleupagus help little viewers feel like part of this world. Created by Joan Ganz Cooney, Lloyd Morrisett and Jim Henson and on the air since 1969, reaching audiences through channels and services including PBS, HBO and Netflix, the programme has featured performers such as Sonia Manzano and Roscoe Orman.
