All Quiet on the Western Front

A closer look at the story

During the First World War, young Paul Bäumer and his classmates are swept up by patriotic speeches at school and volunteer for the German army. They set out with visions of heroism and honour, but on the Western Front they meet a reality that no textbook or teacher ever described. Each day in the trenches tests their friendships and their sense of who they are, while the decisions that shape their fate are made far away from the front line. Adapted from Erich Maria Remarque's novel and directed by Edward Berger, who wrote it with Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, the 2022 film stars Felix Kammerer and Albrecht Schuch in an unflinching portrait of what war does to people.
