Gladiator
Gladiator: From general to the arena on a road to revenge
A closer look at the story
Among Rome's finest commanders, Maximus wants just one thing after his latest victory: to go home to his wife and son. Yet the trust Emperor Marcus Aurelius places in him threatens the ambitions of the emperor's son, Commodus. When Commodus seizes power, Maximus loses everything, narrowly escapes death and ends up fighting for his life in front of paying crowds as a gladiator. As his name grows in the arena, he draws closer to Rome and to the man he means to confront. Directed by Ridley Scott, the 155-minute 2000 film stars Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen and Richard Harris in an epic historical drama about honour, loss and vengeance.
