A closer look at the story
Having lost his wife, the young French blacksmith Balian has lost everything else too, and with it any sense of purpose. A visitor who comes to his door, however, shows him a path of honour and courage, and Balian is suddenly thrust into a world of nobility, court intrigue and bloodstained wars of faith. During the Crusades, amid the splendour and conflicts of medieval Jerusalem, Balian crosses paths with powerful figures such as Sibylla and Tiberias and fights to protect his people against the armies of the great commander Saladin. Despite defeat after defeat, he holds out against overwhelming forces and learns what it truly means to be a knight. Ridley Scott directs from a William Monahan script in this 144-minute 2005 epic historical drama starring Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons and Ghassan Massoud.
